Description
In 14 July - Paris, Roger Bezombes captures the festive and symbolic essence of National Day through a composition that is both naive and energetic. The artist, known for his spontaneous and abundant pictorial language, plunges us here into a world of clean shapes and graphic contrasts where black and white dominate the scene, punctuated with details highlighting the fervor of the moment.
Flags floating in the wind, festive garlands and stylized silhouettes of masts and fanions evoke a parade in motion, a party where history and popular joy mix together. The Eiffel Tower, suggested through geometric shapes and a stylized iron cross, sits in the centre of the composition, recalling classical iconography of Parisian celebrations. The influence of engraving and press drawing is evident in this lithography, where Besombes plays on the sketch and spontaneity of the line to translate the energy of the moment.
The choice of a limited palette gives the work timeless modernity, accentuating the graphic aspect of the drawing. The composition, despite its apparent simplicity, is full of details: the flags evoke different nations, highlighting the international opening of the event. 14 July - Paris is a celebration of freedom, a tribute to the dynamism of the french capital, carried by a living and resolutely contemporary style.
