Biography of Roger Bezombes

Roger Bezombes was born on January 17, 1913 in Paris. An orphan at a very young age, he studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts starting in 1934. A student of Paul Baudoüin, he was influenced by artists such as Maurice Denis, Gauguin, and Matisse. In 1936, he won the second grand prize of Rome, which allowed him to travel to Morocco, where he discovered the play of light and bright colors that would influence his entire body of work.

As early as 1938, he exhibited his first works in Paris, in renowned galleries. His painting then became imbued with Mediterranean and Saharan atmospheres. In 1939, he received the national grand prize for the arts and embarked on numerous journeys, constantly enriching his work with diverse visual and cultural experiences.

Established in the heart of Paris, Roger Bezombes became a professor at the Académie Julian in 1950. He continued his artistic explorations in many countries: Greece, Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine... In 1955, he was appointed official painter of the Navy. A versatile artist, he worked in painting, engraving, sculpture, tapestry, and medal making. He created several monumental frescoes, notably for the Maison de la Radio in Paris, and collaborated with the Gobelins and Aubusson tapestry workshops.
