Description
In this lithography entitled "Le Pont" (1971), Georges Spiro plunges us into a universe at the frontier of reality and imagination, where architecture becomes a metaphor for passage and the unknown. Made on vellum paper in the format of 32 x 25 cm, signed in the board, then numbered and countersigned by hand, the work represents a perfectly masonry stone bridge, rising in a desert and mountainous landscape, under a sky inhabited by an enigmatic suspended sphere. This bridge does not connect anything to anything: it begins on a steep staircase and rises in arc above the void, without reaching an opposite bank.
As in other works by Spiro, careful drawing, all in precise hashs and sharp contrasts, gives the scene an almost metaphysical density. This impossible bridge evokes both the dreamlike constructions of an Escher and the solemn visions of a world in ruins. The sphere, suspended above the arch, introduces a poetic tension: planet, star or abstract sign, it seems to observe, dominate, or balance the whole. Here, Spiro questions the sense of construction, the quest for bond, perhaps absurd, in a composition where each element seems in its place, but without apparent function. The Bridge is a silent and disturbing work, which speaks of elevation, illusion and loneliness with the rigor of a engraver and the sensitivity of a visionary.
