George SPRIO (1909-1984) was a French surrealist painter of Polish origin. Spiro was separated from his young parents and then entrusted to his uncle in Vienna. In 1942 Spiro moved to Nice and began working with children's furniture manufacturers. His free time is devoted to art. During World War II Spiro was sergeant of the French Army Battalion 21/XV. After his wife died (killed in a concentration camp), he joined his brother who emigrated to London. He exhibited these gouaches at the Arcade Gallery in London for the first time. The success of the exhibition was immediate. From this moment on, Spiro devoted himself entirely to art. In 1948, Spiro went to France, and received the Muratore Prize at the Young Painting Exhibition. Numerous exhibitions were dedicated to him in Paris (Galeir Drouant-David), Stockholm, Gothenburg (André Verdet), Bern, Basel, Berlin, Cannes, Nice, Montreal, Miami and New York (Rudolphe Gallery). He knew some success until the end of his life. He left us in Nice in 1984.
