Description
In this 1971 lithography entitled "Les Miss", Emilio Grau-Sala delivers a light and elegant scene. Made on vellum paper of 32 x 25 cm, this work is signed in the board and countersigned by hand by the artist, numbered 122 copies. There are two beauty queens, Miss Sweden and Miss France, camped in a graceful posture, almost frozen, as seized at the moment of the coronation or a moment suspended between rivalry and complicity. The style is direct, graphic, playing on the contrast of dark masses and delicate traits.
True to its world of charm and scenes of worldly life, Grau-Sala sketch here more than just a beauty contest. He crucifies a moment of social theatre, where it becomes an artistic subject. The background, barely sketched, sheds all the light on the two female figures, which seem to float in a box of sepia paper. The viewer's gaze slides on the titrated scarves, the simplified curves, the stylized expressions: everything here evokes the lightness of the fifties-sixty, between Paris and the Riviera. Grau-Sala, trained in Barcelona but deeply marked by the French school, excels in this way of saying a lot with little. A fine and smiling work, ideal for lovers of sensitive designs and retro elegance.
