Description
With Tulips and Iris (Circa 1985), Bernard Buffet proposes a floral interpretation of a great vitality, where the graphic rigor specific to its style is conjugated to a particularly bright palette. This composition, centered around a slender bouquet disposed in a stylized blue vase, is part of the tradition of the dead lifes revisited by the artist with a singular expressive force. The orange tulips, drawn with firmness, dialogue with the irises with soft curves and bluish shades, creating a game of very dynamic rhythms and contrasts. The green, long and tense stems, vertically structure the composition, while the black lines supported come highlight each form with authority. Faithful to its plastic language, buffet imposes an almost architectural construction, while letting vibrate the color. The bright yellow background, traveled with hatching and nerve strings, brings a bright intensity that highlights the bouquet and reinforces the impression of movement. This opposition between the rigor of the drawing and the apparent spontaneity of the graphics confers on the work a particular energy, typical of the buffet creations in the 1980s. Realized in original lithograph on 64-x 47 cm 47 cm paper, this work is Numbered and signed in pencil by Bernard Buffet. It demonstrates the constant interest of the artist for the classic themes of the history of art, which he revisits with a modern, clean and immediately identifiable writing. Certified work, Tulips and Iris seduces with its visual power, its balance between structure and spontaneity, and by the brilliance of its composition. An emblematic lithograph of Bernard Buffet's late period, where the color occupies a place more and more affirmed while maintaining the graphic force that makes the fame of the painter.
