Description

This original lithograph by Marc Chagall titled Towards the Other Clarity holds a special significance in the artist's body of work as it is among the very last creations published during his lifetime. Created in 1985, the year of his passing, this poetic and meditative composition brings together the fundamental themes that accompanied Marc Chagall throughout his career: spirituality, love, memory, and the quest for light.
At the heart of the image is a scene filled with softness and mystery. A seated figure appears to contemplate an intimate vision where human figures, angelic presences, and symbolic elements intertwine. The forms float in an almost unreal space, characteristic of Chagall's universe, where the boundaries between the earthly world and the spiritual world blur. The delicate shades of blue, the artist's emblematic color, envelop the composition in an atmosphere of serenity and contemplation.
The title Towards the Other Clarity evokes an inner elevation, a passage towards a higher light, a theme deeply connected to the spiritual reflection that runs through Chagall's entire body of work. This lithograph can be seen as an artistic testament where the artist, at the twilight of his life, continues his dialogue with the great mysteries of existence and faith.
This edition, reserved for the Friends of the Marc Chagall National Biblical Message Museum in Nice, holds a special status. Numbered M.B. 80/500, it bears the artist's stamped signature as well as a dry stamp from the Marc Chagall workshop. This uniqueness is explained by the fact that it is the last lithograph by the artist published in the year of his passing, as Chagall was unable to sign it by hand. Nevertheless, it remains fully authenticated and constitutes a rare testimony of the master's final creations.
Printed on vellum paper in the format of 62 x 47 cm, this artwork captivates both with its graphic quality and its symbolic significance. It represents a particularly interesting opportunity for Marc Chagall enthusiasts looking to acquire an emblematic lithograph from his final period, imbued with poetry, spirituality, and that inner light which remains one of the most striking features of his work.
