Description
New-York, Coca Cola Building is an original lithograph signed by Bernard Buffet, printed in 1990 at the Mourlot studios. Buffet depicts a Manhattan saturated with verticals: a skyscraper with a bevelled top, a cylindrical tower with orange bands, glazed blocks with green reflections, and brick buildings stacked up to the edge of the sheet.
In the foreground, a row of low red, orange and yellow façades, striped with fire escapes, bears the Coca-Cola sign that gives the work its title. The roadway, treated in broad brown and black flat areas, closes the composition, while the yellow sky is entirely swept with crossed hatching. This network of nervous lines, combined with the black outlining of the architecture, produces the graphic tension that is instantly recognisable.
New York fascinated Bernard Buffet from his first stay in the 1950s, and then on subsequent trips. He returned there several times, in painting as well as in lithography, and the city became one of his great subjects. His views of Manhattan, without figures, turn the metropolis into a dense, almost abstract setting, where colour bursts forth at the foot of the towers. This plate, with its advertising sign at the heart of the street, is a particularly vivid illustration of this.
Printed on laid paper in the format 76 x 58 cm, the impression is numbered and signed in pencil by Bernard Buffet. It is accompanied by its certificate of authenticity and will be dispatched promptly after your order, protected by careful packaging, with tracked and insured shipping.
