Description
Created in 1989, on the occasion of the bicentennial of the French Revolution, The French Revolution: Marianne is an original lithograph by Bernard Buffet that revisits one of the most powerful symbols of the Republic. True to his immediately recognizable style, the artist delivers a sober, expressive, and profoundly modern interpretation of Marianne, the iconic figure of freedom and French identity.
Presented in profile, Marianne wears the famous Phrygian cap in a bright red that contrasts with the blue background and the incisive black lines characteristic of Bernard Buffet. The nervous, almost engraved lines structure the face with great intensity, while the gaze, determined and resolute, evokes both strength and resilience. The artist intentionally reduces the details to focus all attention on the expression and the graphic power of the composition.
This work perfectly illustrates how Bernard Buffet managed to modernize the great themes of French history and heritage without ever abandoning his artistic style. His angular line, limited but striking palette, and sense of composition give this Marianne a monumental presence despite the apparent simplicity of the subject.
Published on vellum paper in a 76 × 56 cm format, this original lithograph is numbered and signed in pencil by Bernard Buffet, guaranteeing its authenticity and interest for collectors. It comes with its certificate of authenticity.
Both a historical, political, and artistic work, The French Revolution: Marianne holds a special place in Bernard Buffet's production. It will appeal to fans of the artist, as well as collectors of works dedicated to the great symbols of the French Republic and high-quality commemorative editions.
