Tony Soulié, Painting that Tears Photography
Tony Soulié, born December 9, 1955, is a French painter, photographer, printmaker, and sculptor, a figure of new abstraction. A great traveler, he combines photography and pictorial gesture to reinvent the cities, deserts, volcanoes, and landscapes he traverses.
Career
Revealed in the late 1970s, Tony Soulié is interested in all arts: painting, land art, photography, writing, theater, acrobatics, and dance. He performed in theatrical productions in the 1980s before designing the sets. His travels to extreme zones, deserts, shores, volcanoes, dense forests, nourish his work. His emblematic technique consists of painting directly on his own photographs, tearing the image with streaks of color and signs. More than a hundred solo exhibitions have been dedicated to him worldwide, and his works are notably in the collections of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
Painting on Photography
The most characteristic gesture of Tony Soulié is to take his own travel photographs, Chicago skyscrapers, Las Vegas neon lights, streets of Hong Kong or Tangier, and traverse them with drips, streaks of color, and signs. The documentary image then becomes an inner vision, halfway between memory and dream. His lithographs and engravings extend this dialogue between recorded reality and the painter's freedom.
