Description
Aquatint is a refined artistic technique that combines printmaking and water to create unique works marked by texture and relief. Developed by Christian Bramsen at the Clot, Bramsen & Georges workshop in Paris, this method involves working a plate made of a soft material, which the artist incises or models before dampening it. Under pressure, the water interacts with the ink and the paper – often thick vellum – to reveal powerful and distinctive textures, where each impression becomes a work in its own right. The artist Tony Soulié has mastered this technique with brilliance, as demonstrated by Circus I, an original aquatint created in 2010. Measuring 54 x 74 cm, this piece, numbered and signed at bottom right, bears the expressive hallmark of its creator: a vibrant composition of tense black forms framed by bright reds, sunny yellows and dynamic curves. Certified and unique, this work perfectly illustrates the plastic power and almost sculptural dimension that aquatint makes possible.
