Daniel Ravel, the Light of Cubist Still Lifes
Daniel Ravel, born in 1915, was a French painter and engraver, heir to Cubism, whose still lifes constructed with juxtaposed geometric shapes highlight the light.
An Heir to Cubism
Born in Aix-en-Provence in 1915, Daniel Ravel grew up in Grenoble, where he entered the School of Industrial Arts in the engraving section in 1930. Settling in Paris in 1934, he attended the School of Decorative Arts and frequented the free academies of Montparnasse. Attracted by Cubist painters Roger de La Fresnaye, Robert Delaunay, and Jacques Villon, he constructed still lifes from geometric planes where light plays an essential role. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de Mai, the Salon d'Automne, and the Salon des Tuileries. His first solo exhibition took place in 1956 at the Galerie Lucien Durand.
