Biography of Jean-Pierre Capron

Jean-Pierre Capron (born 4 August 1921 in Cannes) is a French painter and lithographer. He began his artistic training with architectural studies in Lausanne, before moving to Paris in 1945 where he joined the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts. He studied there in the workshop of Eugene Narbonne and became friends with Bernard Buffet, with whom he will share a singular pictorial sensitivity.

Style and influences

Capron develops a very personal figurative style, centered on often urban or semi-rural landscapes, with deaf tones and a silent atmosphere. He paints desert villages, forgotten streets or isolated buildings, in a melancholic atmosphere but never without humanity. The human presence, although rarely visible, is always suggested in his works. His mastery of light and volumes creates powerful and evocative compositions.
