François-Xavier Lalanne, the Sculptor Who Brought Animals into Our Homes
Sculptor and creator, François-Xavier Lalanne (1927-2008) formed with his wife Claude one of the most famous duos in 20th-century art: "Les Lalanne". His sheep serving as seats, his rhinoceros-desk, or his bird-bars broke the boundary between art and everyday objects, with humor, poetry, and craftsmanship.

From Painting to Sculpture
Born in Agen, François-Xavier Lalanne moved to Paris after the war to study painting and sculpture at the Académie Julian. As a guard at the Louvre, he developed an interest in Egyptian and Assyrian antiquities, whose stylization of animals deeply influenced him. Settled on Impasse Ronsin, he was a studio neighbor of Constantin Brancusi and mingled with Max Ernst, Jean Tinguely, and Niki de Saint Phalle.
Les Lalanne, a Unique Duo
In 1952, he met Claude Dupeux, who became his partner and later his wife. Both signed their works separately but exhibited together under the name "Les Lalanne". Claude drew from the plant world, with cabbages, leaves, and galvanized branches, while François-Xavier focused on animals. In 1964, their exhibition "Zoophites" at Galerie J in Paris caused a sensation.
The Bestiary of François-Xavier Lalanne
In 1965, he presented a flock of "Moutons de laine" serving as seats at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture: they would become his most famous work. This was followed by the "Rhinocrétaire", rhinoceros-desk, hippopotamus-bathtub, bird-bars, monkey-lamps, bronze gorillas, and donkey-bookshelves. Inspired by the surrealist idea of the poetic object, he created sculptures that were both useful, monumental, and full of spirit, with great technical perfection.
Collectors and Recognition
Les Lalanne counted among their collectors Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, Gunter Sachs, and the Rothschild family. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris dedicated a major retrospective to them in 2010, and their works now achieve record prices at major international auctions.
Posters and Editions
Beyond his sculptures, François-Xavier Lalanne's universe was disseminated through lithographs and exhibition posters, notably for Galerie Alexandre Iolas or the bookstore-gallery La Hune in Paris. These now-rare papers allow one to hang the artist's famous sheep and animals at home.
