Description
This work is fully part of the world of the artist, whose creations are often marked by political and social messages.
With Obey Icon, Shepard Fairey signs one of the most emblematic works of the street art. This screenprint, drawn from the stylized face of wrestler André the Giant, became a cult motif, as did Warhol's banana or Banksy's little rat. The composition, minimalist and powerful, borrows from the codes of political propaganda (especially Soviet and Maoist) while deviating them in a resolutely pop aesthetic. The black/white/red bichromy, the frontality of the portrait and the iconicity of the word OBEY refer to the visual universe of Barbara Kruger, a pioneering figure in feminist and conceptual art, whose slogans in white letters on a red background influenced an entire generation of graphic and committed artists.
In this work, Fairey also extends the tradition of hijacking dear to situationists, like Guy Debord or the Bazooka group posterists in the 1970s. It reactivates the subversive power of the poster, urban support par excellence, in the same way as JR, whose monumental collages also play with the public space and the look of the passerby. The echo is also obvious with pop art figures like Roy Lichtenstein for the work of the line, or Keith Haring for the militant and spontaneous diffusion of the image.
Obey Icon is therefore more than just a repeated visual: it is an artistic statement about power, visual manipulation, social control — a condensed of underground culture, media criticism and aesthetic affirmation. For lovers of street art, graphic design, committed art or radical visual culture, this work is a standard, at the crossroads of the worlds between Basquiat, Warhol, and the visual icons of punk or skate culture of the 80s-90s.
