Description
Legendary reggae producer and dub sound pioneer Lee "Scratch" Perry died on August 29. I discovered Lee Perry for the first time when I explored Bob Marley and the Wailers and discovered that Perry had produced several flagship pieces of the Wailers. I also loved the song of Clash "Police and Thieves", which I learned was a cover of Jamaican artist Junior Murvin Lee Perry produced. Perry also co-produced the Clash song "Complete Control". Perry made a ton of good music with his band, Upsetters, and collaborated with a range of artists ranging from King Tubby to Adrian Sherwood, including the Beastie Boys. I was excited when the photographer Dennis Morris suggested that we collaborate on a tribute to Lee "Scratch" Perry, and I decided to make an illustration based on some of the photos of Dennis from the 1970s of Perry at work in his Black Ark recording studio. I love the visual energy of Perry and the studio itself, which, I think, transmits the sound energy and joyful spirit as an iconic musician, producer and pioneer

He was the light! The strangest thing about Lee Perry was that every time I photographed him, I never needed light. For example, at the last session I did with him in early 2000, we spent the night travelling to London on top of an open roof bus; it was late, it was dark, but Scratch was shining, he brought the light! He was really a magic master of music and sound. He not only heard music, he saw music, he saw colors. Seeing him playing in the studio was really magical, he jumped, he jumped, he pressed a button... he pressed another button and the sounds exploded speakers!
