SHEPARD FAIREY (OBEY) - "OP ART" screen printing 91x61cm

The "OP ART" screenprint of Shepard Fairey, known as OBEY, is a striking work that combines the hypnotic aesthetics of optical art with the profound social criticism that characterizes his work. Through wavy and dynamic lines, the artist builds a captivating composition in which an ambiguous, almost spectral, face is subtly revealed, formed by brilliantly superimposed optical motifs. This face, while distorting and mysterious, invites the viewer to question his perception while evoking the visual influence mechanisms used by the media and institutions.

The bold colours – a striking blend of pink, green and blue – reinforce the visual tension of the work, while highlighting the energy characteristic of street art. These vibrant shades do not just attract the eye, they create a dynamic that amplifies the immersive effect of the composition. The use of the "op art" style, traditionally associated with fascinating but decorative visual effects, here takes on a subversive dimension: Fairey appropriates this aesthetic to convey a critical message about manipulation and visual control, central themes of his work.

The "obey" logo, discreetly placed at the bottom of the composition, acts as an iconic signature, while serving as a direct reminder of the artist's origin in street art and his work on propaganda. Through this simple inclusion, Fairey places his work in continuity, that of his questioning about authority, conformism and the role of images in our contemporary societies. The imposing screen printing format (91x61 cm) reinforces this impact, giving the work an almost monumental presence that interpels and dominates space.

Combining captivating aesthetics and committed words, "OP ART" illustrates perfectly how Shepard Fairey transcends the borders of street art to impose as a key figure of contemporary art. This work is not just a visually striking composition, it is also a provocation, a reflection on the role of images in our daily lives and on our ability to decode hidden messages. It is both hypnotic and subversive, which captures attention and invites reflection, thus embodying the very essence of the street art engaged.
