Description
With God Save Abortion, Shepard Fairey crossed a new border in her militant engagement, merging visual art and political activism. This work, born from a powerful collaboration with Nadya Tolokonnikova of the collective Pussy Riot, embodies the fierce defense of women's human rights, at a time when abortion is again called into question in many countries. Borrowing on the aesthetics of Soviet constructivism and the graphic codes of counter-culture punk – one thinks of the famous "God Save the Queen" of the Sex Pistols – Fairey here composes a modern and poignant icon. The woman's gaze, grave and luminous, stands out on a background decorated with floral motifs, which contrast with the brutality of the message: "God save abortion. Women and their allies, please step up if God is unavailable. "
The artist is part of the tradition of the propaganda portrait, evoking war posters or revolutionary figures such as Angela Davis, but reinterpreted through the prism of contemporary feminist struggles. The sharp colours, dominated by red, black and cream, amplify the urgency of the matter. The blue tear, on the other hand, refers to a universal and deeply human emotion. One thinks of Käthe Kollwitz for the power of the female face, or Barbara Kruger in the frontal use of typography as a political weapon. This screen printing is not merely a cause: it becomes a visual manifesto. Signed with four hands, it combines art, revolt and solidarity with rare intensity.
