Description
With Fractured, Shepard Fairey continues to explore socio-political tensions through a composition that is both frontal and dense. The title, literally meaning "fractured", acts as a key to reading the work: visual elements seem to overlap, overlap and sometimes contradict each other. A black silhouette with crossed arms — tattooed with the iconic star d-Obey — occupies the centre of the image, on which we can read the injunction "Rise Above", message of hope but also alert. In the background, a collage of used symbols and typographies creates a palimpsest effect, evoking collective memory, erasure and resilience. The contrast between the bright red of the stylized building in the foreground and the deaf bruises of the background accentuates this impression of visual and ideological dislocation.
Through this screen printing designed on the occasion of an exhibition (as suggested by the address "1275 Minnesota"), Fairey questions the places of creation, production and exhibition as many territories of struggle. The phrase "Fractured" also resonates as a sense of broken unity — whether social, cultural or political. Here we find the artist's graphic universe: a narrow but striking palette, a taste for disturbed symmetrical composition, and a committed iconography. Shepard Fairey does not just produce strong images; he summons the spectator to a critical reflection, with a work that oscillates between manifest and visual alarm signal.
