BUFFET Bernard - Original lithograph "Ram" 53x72cm - 1960

This original lithograph by Bernard Buffet, entitled Bélier, created in 1960, is part of one of the most powerful and emblematic periods of his graphic work. Through this animal representation, the artist deploys all the expressive force of his line, combining formal rigor, dramatic intensity, and a deep symbolic sensitivity.

The ram, the central figure of the composition, is treated with that incisive black line that immediately characterizes Bernard Buffet's universe. The monumental, almost architectural horns encircle the animal's head and masterfully structure the space. The dark and penetrating gaze seems filled with inner tension, while the vigorous hatchings animate the surface and give the scene an almost dramatic vibration. The ochre background, worked by overlapping lines and textures, reinforces the visual power of the whole and accentuates the contrast with the light areas of the subject.

Through this work, Bernard Buffet does not settle for a simple naturalistic representation. The ram becomes a symbolic figure, evoking strength, resistance, and a certain harshness of the human condition, recurring themes in his work. This lithograph perfectly exemplifies his unique graphic language, where each line carries emotion and structure.
