Description
Created in 1989 in the Mourlot workshops, Don Quixote and the Bearded Duenna is an original lithograph by Bernard Buffet inspired by the universe of the famous novel by Miguel de Cervantes. This composition illustrates an episode where Don Quixote's imaginative knightly spirit is confronted with the stagings and illusions that punctuate his journey.
The work presents two immediately recognizable characters. On the left, the Bearded Duenna, dressed in an imposing costume with theatrical accents, dominates the composition with her stature and solemn attitude. Facing her, Don Quixote appears seated, his body disproportionately elongated according to Bernard Buffet's cherished aesthetic codes. The gesture of the knight, his hand reaching towards his interlocutor, conveys both the astonishment and sincerity that characterize this character in perpetual pursuit of an ideal.
Bernard Buffet's incisive line structures the entire scene. The nervous lines, abundant hatchings, and marked contrasts create an atmosphere that is both dramatic and ironic. True to his personal vision of Don Quixote, the artist accentuates the hero's fragility while preserving his dignity, making this encounter a moment rich in psychological tension.
This original lithograph on vellum paper, measuring 76 x 58 cm, is justified H.C. (Hors Commerce), a proof reserved for collaborators of the edition. It is signed in pencil by Bernard Buffet and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. An emblematic work from the Don Quixote series, particularly appreciated for its expressive graphics and personal interpretation of one of the masterpieces of Spanish literature.
