Description
With L'arène, les capes, an original lithograph from 1971, Jean Jansem captures the most intense moment of the bullfight: the pass. At the center, the black mass of the bull charges, head down, towards the red cape unfurled by a torero dressed in white. Around him, the other actors in the arena create a true choreography: on the left, two figures wave yellow and orange capes, on the right, a figure with a pink skirt and a character in a striped sailor shirt seem suspended in motion.
Jansem constructs the scene with great economy of means. An almost uniform gray background, a dark band at the top, a precise and nervous ink drawing, and a few colors applied in rubbing, as with pastels, suffice to evoke the tension and elegance of the combat. The elongated bodies, so characteristic of the artist, give the scene an almost dance-like dimension.
Printed on vellum paper in the format 50 x 65 cm, this lithograph is numbered 22/140 at the lower left and hand-signed in pencil by Jean Jansem at the lower right. It belongs to the series dedicated to the arena, alongside La tribune and La muleta, and will delight bullfighting enthusiasts as well as print collectors.
