Description
With Defend Your Freedoms – Freedom of Assembly, Shepard Fairey celebrates one of the essential foundations of any democracy: the right to gather and make one's voice heard. In a monumental composition, a speaker seen from behind faces an immense crowd converging towards the Washington Monument, whose vertical silhouette becomes a symbol of the American democratic ideal. The rigorous perspectives, the monumentality of the architecture, and the power of the red, blue, and cream flat colors give the image an immediately recognizable intensity. Inheritor of the aesthetic of 20th-century propaganda posters, Fairey subverts their codes to defend not an ideology, but the universal principles of freedom, citizen participation, and collective mobilization. The work perfectly illustrates his ability to transform a simple graphic language into an image of considerable political and symbolic significance.
Since his beginnings with the Obey Giant campaign, Shepard Fairey has used public space as a place for debate and reflection, turning each of his creations into a call for civic engagement.
