Pierre Garcia-Fons, Catalan Painter of the Jeune Peinture
Pierre Garcia-Fons (1928-2016), born in Badalona near Barcelona, was a French painter of Catalan origin. Fleeing the Spanish Civil War, he arrived in France in 1938 at the age of ten and grew up in Perpignan before settling in Paris in 1950.
The Jeune Peinture
In Paris, he mingled with Cueco, Bernard Buffet, Antoni Clavé, Paul Rebeyrolle, and Arroyo. Influenced by Cézanne and later by Bonnard, he received a travel grant and the Antral Prize in 1956, followed by the Fénéon Prize in 1958. As organizer and vice-president of the Salon de la Jeune Peinture until 1967, he also exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon de Mai, and Comparaisons.
A Sensual and Imaginary Work
Nearly fifty solo exhibitions, from Paris to New York, Tokyo, Caracas, or Céret, trace an evolution without rupture, from a sensual and jubilant painting to a more mental conception, open to the imagination. Numerous critics, from George Besson to Pierre Cabanne and Lydia Harambourg, have dedicated texts to him.
