Biography of Frédéric Menguy

Frédéric Menguy (born 1927 in Paris) is a French painter. Trained at the School of Applied Arts, it is quickly distinguished by a colorful, joyful and immediately recognizable style. In the 1950s, Menguy began to exhibit in major salons, including the Automne Salon and the Independents. His work, of great coherence, is part of a modern figurative tradition, influenced by Matisse, Bonnard or Raoul Dufy.

Her pictorial world is populated by women, musicians, horses and popular parties, evoking a tender and poetic world. Frank colours and stylized forms create a visual language close to music, where emotion dominates narration. Menguy remained true to this vision throughout his career, celebrating life through light scenes, without giving in to decorative ease.

Style and influences

Menguy's art is a festival of color. His compositions, often very rhythmic, are built on a balance between structured drawing and vibrating flats. He draws from childhood memories, travels, music or circus. His trait, flexible and expressive, gives a particular energy to his characters. In its palette, red, blue and yellow play a central role, reinforcing the communicative cheerfulness of its works.
