Description
With La lagune, an original lithograph from 1967, Jean Jansem presents one of his most contemplative compositions. An immense sky, in a marbled green-gray with light and clouds, occupies nearly three-quarters of the sheet. At the bottom, a thin horizon line reveals a city set on water, its ochre facades and white campanile reflected in a turquoise lagoon. To the right, on a wooden pier on stilts, four figures contemplate the expanse, near a large mooring post.
Jansem's art here lies in the contrast of scales: against the vastness of the sky and water, the small human figures, drawn with precise ink lines and enhanced with flesh tones, give the scene its depth and melancholy. The material effects, made of stippling, veils, and rubbing, finely convey the humid light of the lagoons, those of Venice and its islands.
Printed on wove paper in a large vertical format of 76 x 56 cm, this lithograph is an artist's proof numbered XXIII/XXX at the lower left and hand-signed in pencil by Jean Jansem at the lower right, a print particularly appreciated by collectors.
A French painter and lithographer of Armenian origin (1920-2013), Jean Jansem found in Venice a major source of inspiration, to which he dedicated numerous paintings and prints where the city and its inhabitants seem timeless.
Sold with its certificate of authenticity, this print is carefully packaged and shipped within 24 to 48 hours with tracked and insured delivery.
